We are learning to use a ruler. We have been making line segments to write our names on the math page. We are working on the fractions of ½ and ¼. We will continue to work on subtraction and addition daily. Every day we work on telling time and money. We are working with telling time by half hour and hour intervals, quarter after and quarter till have been introduced. We have been adding using dice, playing cards, and dominoes. We go to the computer lab on Wednesdays and Fridays to work on Math Flash. Don’t forget that you can access Math Flash at home. If you have any questions please let me know.

Monday we started our last hard back reader of the series. The stories in this book will focus on “Great Ideas” and what differences can be made with a great idea. Remember a list of sentences will be sent home on Mondays. These sentences will contain the most commonly used words in our story of the week. Please review them with your child nightly. Their readers will continue to come home on Mondays. Please read the story with your child. I would ask you not to read ahead in the book. Feel free to reread any story that we have already tested on. Please sign and date the paper in the bag and return it with their reader on Tuesday.

We will have a reading test every Friday.

We will be taking A.R. quizzes in our individual reading levels next week. They will check books out every Wednesday and quiz on the books they choose the following Wednesday. Please make sure your child reads their book several times. Independent reading time in the classroom will also include AR quizzing. This will help prepare them for second grade.

Some of the new Phonics rules we are learning are Digraphs oa, ey, ow, and ph.

We will learn the soft G sound and Ghost letter digraphs. (kn, wr, and gn)The small paper books have started coming home. Please read these with your child, sign and return the following day. We will read them before they come home and again the following day.

Spelling lists will come home on Mondays. We will take our spelling test on Friday. Please review the words with your child. Remember to study the sentences on the back of the sheet. (They are also part of the spelling test.) The spelling words follow the rules of phonics that we have during the week.

Our Religion series will focus on our lives as a parish as we come together to worship and work together. On Fridays we have a series called Promise. These packs go over the Gospel readings for Sunday’s Mass. We started a series called ABC I Believe. These activities focus on a verse from the bible and how we should live these lessons in our daily lives.
